Shake It Up - Shaker Kitchen Style
Posted on 07 November 2014 In kitchen design, Kitchen Inspirations
Shaker kitchens have long been the most popular design of kitchen from our 43 strong collection for those designing traditional and modern kitchens alike. Shaker door styles can be found on our Shaker Classic, Alderley, Washington, Warminster, Shaker Twist and Shaker High Gloss kitchens.
A timeless look, the shaker kitchen has a signature door style. The popularity of shaker kitchens undoubtedly stems from the versatility of this simple design, which can be uniquely styled in all sorts of gorgeous variations for a bespoke kitchen.
We asked our interior expert Amanda Watson why shaker kitchens are so popular and how to style them in both modern and classic kitchens.
Traditional Shaker Kitchen
We’ve styled our Shaker Classic, Alderley, Washington and Warminster displays with beautiful period touches to show how they can deliver a classic look.
Natural timber finishes work extremely well, as shown on our Shaker Classic Kitchen in a warming oak finish, we’ve also teamed it with our Laminate ‘Iquilos Noir’ worktop that oozes class.
Natural wood can also be mixed with a cream, white or painted kitchen through worktops, chairs or bar stools, instantly giving a shaker kitchen a more country feel, as shown in the Alderley.
Handles can transform the look too – a thin bar handle is another accessory that stands out beautifully against wooden cabinetry. For kitchens with cream or white cabinetry, such as our Washington and Warminster kitchens try introducing rounded oak finish door knobs for a country-classic look.
Unique styling touches can really enhance the shaker look, creating beautiful variations, bespoke to your home. A dresser unit such as the dresser unit featured in our Washington kitchen below can bring a stunning centre piece to the kitchen. Or for a more subtle styling variation, opt for curved units as a quirky, modern update to the classic shaker design.
Modern Shaker Kitchen
To update the classic shaker design with a contemporary edge introduce modern appliances, quirky statement handles and a high gloss finish.
Our contemporary Shaker Twist Kitchen and Shaker High Gloss Kitchen in Cream and White juxtapose classically crafted cabinetry with sharp, angular steel handles for a modern feel.
This design also integrates statement appliances, including the four part kitchen ‘Cube’ of cooking appliances – one of 2014’s key kitchen design trends.
For a contemporary, wow-factor kitchen, perfect for an apartment or urban townhouse, add a statement light or extractor.
