National Cupcake Week is in full swing, and so is our appetite for sweet treats! We’re craving sweet cupcakes, savoury cupcakes, classic cupcakes and adventurous cupcakes – anything to satisfy our sweet tooth and make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
We’re sure that many of you are feeling the same (especially with the fifth series of the Great British Bake Off gracing our screens), so we thought we’d spend the week highlighting delicious recipes that you can try at home, as submitted by the talented entrants to our recent cupcake competition. Today we are shining the spotlight on children’s cupcake themes that you absolutely must try.
Baking in general is an activity that children will love, whether they are helping out with bringing a creation to life or just wolfing down the result. However, cupcakes in particular offer the opportunity for them to really release their creative side with endless flavour combinations and vibrant decorations, as demonstrated by this jazzy rainbow piñata cupcakes recipe. As well as rainbow swirl icing and colourful hundreds and thousands, these clever cupcakes contain a little surprise… a centre full of Smarties just waiting to tumble out and make your little ones shout, “Wow!”
As well as being one of the more attractive bakes, cupcakes are also one of the simplest, making them perfect fodder for a family bake-athon. When baking alongside mum and dad, children will learn essential kitchen skills they’ll need in later life, as well as finding out how one of their favourite foods is made. We think this is essential in an age when we Brits know so little about where our food comes from.
This Kinder Bueno cupcakes recipe is just one of these simple yet tasty creations. They take just twenty minutes to bake and the minimal, easy-peasy steps, culminate in a finished product full of healthy hazelnuts, a smooth and creamy filling, and a chocolaty topping that even includes a square of Kinder Bueno. These are sure to be a hit with the kids!
Another simple recipe that draws inspiration from children’s favourite sweet treats is this one, for baked Alaska cupcakes. Hiding a core full of ice cream and topped with a delightful lid of mini-meringues, hundreds and thousands and melted chocolate, you and the kids will get all the taste of baked Alaska without any of the Bake Off-style bin drama.
Whether you are looking for a way to entertain your children on rainy days and holidays, or just to have some fun together that ends in an edible reward, baking cupcakes is a lovely way for you all to while away the hours. Why not grab the ingredients for one of the recipes above, or even keep an eye out for tomorrow’s blog about cupcakes made healthy?
